How to get more gym members in India: 12 ways that work for a local gym
By Himanshu Thakur, Founder, Jimwala · Updated · 6 min read
Most Indian gyms grow by word of mouth and location. That carries you a long way and then stops. After that you need a few habits that bring in new people every month without a big ad budget. These are the ones that fit a neighbourhood gym.
Be easy to find
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: photos, timings, phone, plans, a map pin. Most "gym near me" searches end here.
- Ask happy members for a Google review and reply to every one.
- Have a simple website with plans, timings, trainers and an enquiry form.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical on Google, Instagram, Justdial and your site.
Let people try before they pay
A free trial day or a three-day pass. People who train once are far more likely to join than people who only hear a price. Take a name and number for every trial, and message the next day to ask how it felt.
Call back every enquiry
Most are lost because nobody rang back. Write down every walk-in and call, set a date, contact them again within two days. The CRM guide has a schedule.
Use the members you have
- A referral offer: free days for the member who brings a friend.
- A festival code with an end date, so people decide quickly.
- Transformation stories, with permission, on Instagram and your website.
Show up locally
- A QR poster at your entrance that opens your website or enquiry form.
- A group offer with a nearby office, school, society or clinic.
- A small sponsorship of a local run or cricket team, in exchange for a mention.
Keep the ones you win
A new member takes far more effort than keeping an old one. Reminders before a plan ends, a message when someone stops coming, and an easy renewal do more for growth than another poster.
Count what works
Write down where each new member heard about you. After two or three months you will see which channel is worth your time. Jimwala records the source of every enquiry and shows which sources turn into members.
