How to start a gym business in India: a planning checklist

By Himanshu Thakur, Founder, Jimwala · Updated · 6 min read

Opening a gym is as much planning as equipment. The ones that last usually picked a good location, priced sensibly and kept proper records from day one. This is a general checklist. Rules and costs differ by city, so confirm details with the local authority and a professional before committing money.

Type and members

A general gym, ladies-only, a yoga or Zumba studio, a CrossFit box, a martial arts academy? Who lives and works within about ten minutes of your door? What do nearby gyms charge and what do they lack?

Location

  • Near homes, offices or colleges, with parking or a bus stop.
  • Visible from the road, or at least easy to find on a map.
  • Enough space, and a floor that can take the weight of equipment.
  • A lease long enough to earn back your setup cost.

The money

Setup: interiors, equipment, airflow, flooring, lockers, signage. Monthly: rent, salaries, electricity, cleaning, software, marketing. Work out how many members cover your costs and how long you can run before you reach that number. Keep a reserve for repairs and slow months. Our break-even calculator does the middle step.

Equipment

Buy for your first 50 to 100 members, not the 500 you hope for. Put money into what people use most: cardio, free weights, benches, a stretching area. Add as you grow.

Local rules

Businesses usually need local registrations such as a shop and establishment licence, and depending on city and building, fire safety, trade or other approvals. Ask the local authority and a chartered accountant what applies to you, including whether GST registration is needed at your expected turnover.

Plans, prices, team

Monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and yearly plans with a clear saving on longer ones. Decide the joining fee, personal training prices and freeze rules before you open. A front desk person and one or two trainers are enough to start, with clear roles and a plan for recording attendance and pay. See the pricing guide for the plan ladder.

Systems on day one

Start with proper records, not a register you will migrate later: members and expiry dates, fee tracking, WhatsApp reminders, attendance and a way to follow up enquiries. Jimwala covers all of that and gives you a free website, with a 14-day free trial you can run with your first members.

Launch

  • Claim your Google Business Profile before you open.
  • Run a pre-launch offer for the first members.
  • Photograph and film the finished gym.
  • Ask your first members for reviews and referrals.
